All, just curious if anybody has any contacts for very authentic hat brass, most preferably, numerals and letters in different fonts.
Thanks for your time in advance;
Kindest Regards;

Harold,

Why do you want the hat brass? Most of us protray different units at almost every event. Changing hat brass for every event is a pain and will eventually wreak your Forage Cap. I've taken to sewing corp patches on my sack coat. A lot less wear and tear on the fingers and the hat.

Some guys will buy a second hat and set it up for their home unit to use for parades and other unit activities. My memory is that Levi Leadbetter had a good selection brass and buttons.

I'm not sure what you mean by different fonts?  I thought it was all pretty standard.

Actually on occasion my unit has used just a single letter on the front or top of the forage cap, and as well when I've fallen in with different units, like at Raymond, the company we were in had a singular letter . I've seen different fonts, as in Union Echo's of Glory, but I believe those are what are known as giulded letters and numbers (some were in silver I believe, but may be mistaken). May be I should have posted this in Clothing and Equipment, I apoligize for that.
I can understnad what your saying too,about having all that hat brass on the forage cap and such.
Thanks again

Harold,

If you had, you wouldn't have gotten all the advice about not using hat brass. When people post questions here, most of us assume they are new to the Hobby. We try to help them not make the same mistakes we did.

Harold my brother, I know what you are referring to, as I've noticed as of late the "trend" at some pretty high quality events to have at least a company letter on caps and hats.  We all (or least many of us) know of the complete overuse of hatbrass, particularly on the wrong type of headgear, but perhaps the need for PEC has made brass, or at least company letters or regimental numbers under represented now.  I'm by no means advocating the full-on use , but if we're doing an early war scenario with dress hats, a US Regular, or other impression where its documented, why the heck not?  I've seen some pretty decent early type fonted company letters at EJ Thomas (shoot Bill an email to see what he has left), and if not, shoot me an email in a couple of days and I'll go through the treasure chest of cast-off's and see what I've got.  As for the garden variety sutler row letters and numbers, they aren't too far off from the most issued type anyway. -Ross
