It was nice to meet you and your husband at Sharon Woods on Saturday. I've only been a member of the 6th OVI for going on a year and a half and it is indeed a fantastic group. It would be a pleasure to have you and your husband (if he can get his schedule worked out) join us.

Oh we are definitely joining! Can't fill out the paperwork at the moment as I am in St. Louis on a business trip, but will be doing so as soon as I get home. The DH (Darling Husband) was very enthused on the drive back to Union, and, of course, so am I! The conference team is leaving for dinner in about fifteen minutes, so I have to skedaddle, but I had to take advantage of the hotel internet connection to see what was new on the forum! Oh, I hope the cornbread tasted good on Sunday morning! Next time I'll be glad to bring more along if you'd like me to do so.

Greetings Susannah, We were glad you could make Sharon Woods and meet our great Company. We have a fine group of soldiers and very good NCOs and a terrific Captain. We will be happy to have you with us and you DH with us in the ranks. On behalf of the Commissary Department, (Me) we thank you for the corn bread. (MMMMM...) We have a number of ladies that bring the troops food, and it is much appreciated. We had home made bread and your corn bread and a bag of ginger snaps. If we did not train so hard we would all get fat. Again we are glad to have you both join us. Have a great day and both of you take care of yourselves. See you both soon. Your Obedient Servant, Comm. Sgt. Dan Girton , Co A, 6th OVI

Hello! "Real Life" bit us badly this summer and so it appeared we slipped off of the face of the earth--or at least this forum. Very frustrating! I'm glad to finally get back to the Common Ground. I'm so glad you enjoyed the cornbread. One of these days I'm going to need to actually practice cooking it outside in a dutch oven in our fire ring in the back yard. We had to make a trip back to my husband's home town about two weeks ago and made dedicated effort to visit the gravesites for his ancestors in upstate New York. Specifically, his Tribe ancestors who are buried in Halsey Valley, NY. We found two markers there for two great-great-great uncles that we didn't know anything about, one of whom was killed in the Battle of Fair Oaks and is buried near Richmond, and the other for his brother, who was a waggoner, and was discharged shortly after the battle as "disabled", and who died, apparently of his injuries, the following December. The waggoner is actually buried in Halsey Valley. I can't remember their first names off the top of my head, but when I get home, I'll grab the notes my husband took and update the posting with names, ranks, and the unit. We are still trying to find out if my husband's Great-great-great grandfather actually fought in the war, but so far, we haven't found any documentation regarding him. I'm praying that things improve for us so we can get truly active in reenactment. I'm still doing a lot of reading about nursing the troops, and I'm simply awed by the work that so many nameless women did over the years of the war to take care of the injured and ill. Glad to be back! ![]()

Greetings Susannah, Glad Your Back. The 6th Ohio just had a very good living history weekend at Battery Hooper in Northern Kentucky. (Fort Wright)The weather was great and we had a good number of visitors and they had hot dogs and bar-b-que sandwiches and home made ice cream for us both days. I also cooked for the troops on Saturday night. We had 3 slow cooked chuck roasts and boiled red potatoes and soft bread. And Judi B brought home grown tomatoes and some of the best short bread you ever put in your mouth. MMMMMMMMMMM.... We did get in some training and talked to some men who might be interested in joining or merry band. The dark side was there also, but in small numbers and they did not stay long. Real life does rear it's ugly head now and again. We look forward to seeing you and your DH soon. Mid September, we will be at Caesar's Creek. We get to shoot at the dark side then. Take care of yourselves, Your Obedient Servant, Sgt. Dan Girton

If you can do a reenactment at the end of September, and you have an interest in seeing the authentic side of the civilian hobby, there's a rare opportunity that opened up due to a few drop-outs at an event. It would require some travel, but my wife and I are going from Ohio. Events like this only come around a few times a year for civilians anywhere in the country, so this is a rare chance, and I'd dare say it will be more like stepping back in time than any reenactment you've seen. You could portray a relative, my wife's sister or cousin maybe, and hang out with us and we'd help you get ready, so you wouldn't be a newbie all alone. If you think you might be interested, email me at hanktrent@voyager.net or my wife Linda at lindatrent@zoomnet.net and we can fill you in on the details. The opening isn't being publicly announced, so that's why I can't just post everything here. By the way, this offer is for anyone else, too, male or female, with a civilian impression.
