What books can you guys recommend for the fresh fish who has nothing? Dave mentioned the Columbia Rifles Research Compendium, vol 1 in a different thread. I've read Red Badge of Courage, and the stuff by Sam Watkins and Elisha Hunt Rhodes, but is there anything out there specifically for the modern reenactor?

Thanks for any ideas you guys might have and share.

Hardtack and Coffe is always a good first book.  I think it was John Billings who wrote it.  Guys?

I would suggest checking the library folder on this forum.  It has a good list of some books to read.

Mel,

Are interested in books about the Civil War in general, or books about material culture and/or reenacting?

Ken-
Thanks for the title. I'll google it and see what comes up.

Greg-
Library folder? That sounds a little too straight forward for my tastes.    Thanks pard, I didn't even know it existed. I'll check it out post-haste.

Bill-
Well, both actually, since I'm always looking for a good read. As regards to this question though, I was looking more for something along the reenacting lines.

All-
  Thank you kind gentles.

No problem, it is one of those folders that you don't see at first glance.

I found Si Klegg and His Pard Shorty to be a real good read.

Reliving the Civil War: A Reenactor's Handbook by Robert Lee Hadden is a book on my bookshelf at home.  I don't look at it often, but have skimmed through it.

A copy of Gilhams, Hardees and Caseys isn't a bad thing to have on your book shelf either..

Also Kautz' Customs of Service for Non Commissioned Officers and Soldiers (1864)is another good reference book to keep on hand..

My public library is getting a copy of Reliving…for me. Thanks for the suggestion. I wasn’t able to scare up the library folder though because I'm a dork, but I just found it. Duh.

No military force, modern or ancient, can run without 'em. Good NCOs, that is.

  Hallo!

If you can get only one, IMHO, I would recommend getting the CCRC Volume 2 instead as it has its own new material was well the Volume One material. (And a not that great picture of me.)

Naw.  Herr Schmidt meant CCR.  He was recommending a record album, not a book.  Fogerty is still on the road playing his old songs from the early Seventies with some new tunes added to the old mix.

 Hallo!

I would have gone back and corrected the typo, but it wouold have ruined the subsequent humor...

 Yes.  CRRC.

Although there are many helpful tips in Creedence lyrics for the reenactor, such as:

 "Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bathroom on the right."
