I just finished this bok which is a compiliation of "Original Coverage of The Civil War" based upon the the New York Times with the coverage supplied by the reporters.

While it doesn't carry the excitement of reading some of the first person books it does give a good representation of what was happening in the country (well, the north), emotions, frustrations, etc.
