Jeffrey Wert probably does the most justice to J.E.B. Stuart than the other biographers of the ANV's cavalry chief. He puts forth the good and bad while offering a large amount of footnotes to prove his huge amount of research. He not only covers Stuart's ambition (he wrote several lettters to well-connected people to lobby for promotion to Lt/Gen of an ANV infantry corps) but also the little things such as his hats (a U.S. forage cap in the days leading up to 1st Manassas) and the type of pistol he was carrying at the time of his wounding (a Whitney revolver).

Mr. Wert does this biography well. While Stuart certainly has had his share of biographers, I'd rate this one as the finest.

Jeff is a good speaker also and a really informed historian. I have always enjoyed hearing him speak and talking to him.
