Yea, those are gaitors. Anyway Look  at the enlisted man 5th to our left of the guy with the guidon, beard, head turned to face the camera, frock coat. Is that his coat collar? Fancy stuff!

It looks like his knapsack straps cutting across his chest and under his arms.  Look at the man that is 3rd over from HIS left.  Looks like he has similiar straps on his body.  

I will see if I can get a closer view of it..

The horses in the high ground look wild.  It's almost as if they are part of a painting mixed into the flag.  Kind of something you would buy at a hillbilly flea market.
