I wonder how it felt. Knowing you'd never see any or many of these men, ever again. Their stories and experiences were turning into history. Asking Grandpa what it was like in the Civil War would soon pass away forever.

As a Scouter, I couldn't help but notice the gentleman pushing the wheelchair is an Eagle Scout as well. This picture would be enjoyed by Scout historians as well.

The comment about WWII vets getting fewer in number reminded me that the D-Day Museum in New Orleans was interviewing WWII vets about their war time experiences.  If a WWII vet came through the museum door he/she was given opportunity to contribute.  This was before the storm.  I don’t know what their current status is.

Grumpy,

Makes sense. First because they would be younger than the earlier enlistees. Second, and probably more important. They all had less than one year for the service to ruin their health!

I was looking around the cemetery, in Lexington, VA, where Stonewal Jackson is buried. I was struck by the number of graves where guys died in the 1870's, mostly between the ages of 30 and 40 years old. These were all vets who died in the War and didn't know it.

Do we know how many of the Vets actually passed away during the reunion? There had to be some.

Very interesting pictures! You bring up a good point regarding those soldiers who passed away at an early age due to their military service. I've researched a great, great, great uncle who served in the 11th GA Infantry Regiment. Sgt. Benjamin Ensley was captured in East Tennessee in 1864 and was sent to Rock Island Prison. Ensley was released after the war, and passed away in 1877. He had a brother who was KIA that served in the same company and regiment at Gettysburg.
