Dave

For the post/late war photo, does it have anything to do with his cap or the chair?

The Sgt's diamonds look to be solid rather than 4 seperate sides.

Dave,

The late war photo may be assumed to be due to the service stripe on the sleeves?

What type of coat are they wearing?  It looks like a 7 button shell type jacket, but the buttons look to be plain.

Like the pipe in the one guys hand.

Greg, Both PA and Mass. sent troops off to war wearing gray shell jackets. These boys look like they're wearing jackets made in PA, I've seen a very few existing examples. The guy with the pipe also looks like he's got something inside his jacket, not the bulge above his waste belt, on our right. His pipe looks like any $2 Dr. Grabow you could buy in any smoke shop in the states.

Maybe his tobacco pouch in there.

Speaking of Dr Grabow, their business is in the town where my wife was born and raised (Sparta, NC) so I have passed their facility a few times.  We also have some pipes that her grandfather who worked there helped design.  He was able to keep one of the first runs of the pipe.  There is a neat one in there that is this little tiny pipe.

I have a friend who has a smoking "kit" with provanance to an officer in the 122nd NY. The gutta percha pipe is no longer than your index finger when it's removed from it's place and assembled. There's a little tin, a little smaller then a sardine can. The pipe comes apart in two pieces. If memory serves me, there's a place for the pipe, matches and tobacco.
