The more I look at that last photo, the more I think that fellow has on a mounted service jacket, either cavalry or artillary, because of the buttons on the collar. But, you can't see any trim. There's always the posibility it's a Confederate with an early war or commutation jacket.

That jacket looks huge on him.  And did he want to make sure people would know he was a Sgt??

Man that corporal looks young.

Nice watch fob on that first picture also.

Anyone notice the 6th and 11th corps badges?

Yup.

On the last picture of the guy in full kit, his cap box and cartridge box is on the wrong side (or it is a reverse image and he has the musket on the wrong side) and it appears that where his cap box should be there is something else hanging there, any idea what it is. Also do I need to get my glasses checked or is his belt plate upside down?

Also on the first picture, what jacket is he wearing with buttons down both sides?

Yup its an MSJ. The metal tabs on the shoulders are the hardware for mounting the shoulder scales. Often times in period photos, the yellow trim on cavalry garments appears as a darker color and on MSJ's it appears to disappear completely.

If you thought the Federal corporal I just posted looked young, How about this Confederate private:

Couple of Federals:
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/1231/corporalfrockmw8.jpg
http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/9125/federalfrockandbootsfk1.jpg

The tintype on the right is a Federal; the one on the left, the two fellows; I'm not so sure. Is the guy on the right wearing an early war or civilian frock? Are they brothers, one on each side? Who knows? However both of the jackets look like New York state jackets.:

Look at the pocket on the outside of this frock coat. He has his hat at a jaunty angle and his pants are rolled up, very poorly I might add, to show off his boots. He's a dandy:

Dave,Thanks for all the pictures.  It is interesting to me to see all the different styles of coats and all the buttons, Some have four or five buttons and some have a coat full of buttons. The one young soldier you posted (8/23), the one just above "The Dandy",is a very young lad but he has his "War Face" on. smile/mad.gif As the company cook , I have been web searching for camp and cooking photos, to improve my impression.I have down loaded four or five of the common ones.If you run across any real interesting camp and cooking photos, please post them. Again thanks.

Keep your powder dry. Pvt. Dan Girton (Sink Rat)
