About the soldier with the dog...I see: 1. a paper collar 2. a very definite hem line along the sack and up the button side 3. looks like a cut line along the sleeve 4. the cap seems McDowell like 5. is he wearing glasses? 6. trousers appear to be dark blue Early war? | |||

I'm a bit concerned about that middle picture. | |||

Notice the white gloves George is wearing! Don't see that too often. | |||

What are you seeing civilian about the guy with the frock coat on the horse, other than the civilian tack? The man himself looks totally military to me. Brass buttons, stand-up collar... He looks like an experienced rider, from his posture and the way he's holding the reins and whip, even though he's only got a snaffle bit. What's that light thing on the reins just ahead of the horse's neck? Some kind of martingale? I don't see any connecting strap. Or is it just an artifact from the background like I think the light patch is in front of the horse's nose. Hank Trent hanktrent@voyager.net |

Being a retired art teacher, I enjoy looking at the painted backdrops. Check out those tall slender tents in George’s photo. Would you assume the painter was not a military person? | |||

The man on the horse looks military to me. His saddle seems small though. Could be English. | |||

Some Officers: reverse of the above pic: 2nd Rhode Island guys, early war. Taken in Camp Brightwood, Washington City. Remember, put your name on your chair: Shaw was killed at Petersburg in '64. --Last edited by grumpydave on 2007-09-14 07:04:40 -- | |||

Look at the small buttons on the three boys at the bottom. Safe to say those aren't military type sacks. You think? | |||

Are they wearing sacks or are they also wearing overshirts? The boy in the middle, his button's stop right by his pocket. | ||||

Greg, I think you are correct about that boy. At closer look you can see the outer material where the V neck stops. The buttons are still quite small though. | |||

I saw a copy of Military Images this morning and it had this photo in it. I recall it saying the revolver is a Starr revolver. I need to borrow that issue from my friend and look it over some more.. | ||||

Without comment of further adu...privates, these could have been any of our neighbors.(I still have tons & tons to post) Hat cords on privates are soooo FARBY Each man, a different look on his face. Wearing his clothing a slightly different way. Individuals with the same spirit. "We are coming, coming, 300,000 more..." Did he lie on some field, horribly wounded, dying? Did he have a job, a family? Did he survive to become someone famous? Reference the shell jacket the guy in the second new picture is wearing: Is it true that volunteers got a single false buttonhole and button on the collar and regulars got two? Or was any such distinction between the two ever made? | |||

It looks like the soldier with the undressed Hardy hat, is wearing a nave blue Great Coat. Anybody have an idea how common they were? | |||

---I understand the collar/trim/button thing was strictly observed by the regular units. ---Bill, are you sure that Greatcoat isn't gray? I've seen those. Anyway, I've also seen them in dark blue. Neither were common, although they both exist. Government needs greatcoats fast. Contractor says well, I have this cloth. Inspector says OK, make em'. It happened. The other possibility is, it's a private purchase coat. It's just another one of those examples where "we" know a lot but we're still learning and, may never know. | |||
