Ever count the buttons on a veteran reserve jacket? Tis the same amount, and they are small ones too.

Were the collar and cuffs that light of blue when original? Interesting item..first I have seen one.

Grump,

I'm no expert on Federal uniforms. Any specific reasons you think this is a GAR coat? Most of them, I've seen in pictures, were sack coats.

Provanance is to Richard Maroney Co. C. 69th NY.

The interior construction seemed to modern, for lack of a better term, than the original frocks I've seen, even private purchase officers stuff. The last thing an officer wanted to do in the field was to stand out. That would surely mean a horrible end. Unless, which I don't think, it's a very early war coat. Maybe I want it to be a GAR coat so bad because I don't want to see them start showing up on the field. LOL

The button holes are definatly machine sewn. Yes, there were period button hole machines but, by far and away, most were hand sewn.

There just seems (here's a pun..seams) to me there's a lot of machine sewing. Look how the interior pockets are rolled on the top then sewn like my modern suit jackets, as one example.

Dave,

Not to sound too cynical, but with this being on e-bay how much can the providence be trusted. This may be an old repop that has been doctored up for an unsuspecting buyer.

Look at the last photo, left side, where the buttons are sewn on. Is it just me or, is the same thread used to hold on some of the buttons that the name and such is sewn in with?

Unusual to see a collar tag also. It's starting to smell like fish in here isn't it?

Collar tag is another reason why it's GAR(or fake).
