The wedding band could be a pinky ring. They were popular in the 19th century. The West Point Class Rings at the time were pinky rings. As to Union or Confederate or 12th Corp or Texas Brigade...tough one based on the picture.

I count ten buttons, with maybe one more under the waist belt. Can anyone makeout what's on that belt buckle? It doesn't look like an eagle to me. As usual, lost and confused.

im counting 12 buttons. once you get down to the creases its a bit harder to count, but there are 12... one under the buckle. ive zoomed in on the buckle and all im getting is a circle... but there is something else in it. here perhaps its this one http://www.go-star.com/antiquing/confedbuckles.htm (didnt want to link the pic and steal their bandwidth!)... the last pic on the page.. says its a general officers.

The "circle" on the mans buckle is actually the 3 piece applied silver wreath on the `58 enlisted saber belt or NCO belt. The jacket to me looks like a Mounted Service jacket with a shortened and folded colar. Dave Myrick

I've seen a lot of Union images like this. Badge and beltplate make it pretty sure to be a mounted trooper in the XII Corps.
