Robert, let me be so bold as to recommend picking up a good Sir Walter Scott novel or two to more fully understand an engine driving the romance of the period, and why Billy Mahone and Otelia named certain AM&O railroad towns they way they did.

I have an 1800's copy of "The Lady of the Lake," by Scott. Dang, is that novel ever raunchy. Those lonely boys must have loved it.
