I visited the Museum of the Confederacy on Tuesday. What a mess. I've been there dozens of times and I almost missed the place. The University of Virginia Medical Center has more construction going on right in front of the Museum and even the front entrance to the parking garage is closed. It took me twenty minutes just to park my car. When I finally made it in, the place was pretty much empty. I had a nice talk with the man behind the counter and told him about my problems getting into the museum. He shook has head and commented that he lives in Richmond and he has trouble getting into the Museum! We talked about the plans to move the Museum and keep their collection intact. They'd like to stay in the Richmond area, but nothing has been finalized yet. The only firm decision is to leave the Confederate White House where it now stands.

They have two new displays; one on the Confederate Navy and another on Virginia during the War. They have put away their display of common soldier clothing and equipment, which I missed. I made a joke with one of the Staff that I noticed they'd put away the Farby private's kepi. The man had no clue what I was talking about. A joke isn't funny when you have to explain the concept of PEC to a historian!

If you aren't a mamber of the MOC, please consider joining. They really need the money right now. From a selfish point of view, being a member gives you a leg up on getting in the back rooms where all the neat stuff is kept.
