Folks, I'm hearing on the AC boards that we have lost one of our members here...Duke Culberson suddenly this past Sunday.  Bill, you knew him better than I, maybe you can confirm?

Duke and I have butted heads in the past, but I worked/served under him a few times.  I was with him at Lookout Mountain in 2003, and Into the Wildernes in 2004.  He was a very knowledgeable man who made his points very clear and direct.  Anyone have more definite info?

I'd say it's pretty official:

Just got this, for those who wish to send flowers

---------

I have received everything as far as plans for David Culberson's visitation
and memorial service. His visitation will be at his home at 1563 Beach Creek
Road Lexington, SC 29072 from the hours of 6-8 p.m on Wednesday August 29th.
A memorial service will be held for him at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church at
119 N Church St Lexington, SC 29072 at 11 a.m. His body will be at Thompson
Funeral Home in Lexington (803-996-1023) but I'm not sure if it is an open
casket or not.

Duke Culberson helped me get started doing more authentic events. He was a long time member of the Rowdy Pards and served in leadership positions at a number of CPH events, such as McDowell and the War on the James.

Rather than flowers, I would suggest people donate for battlefield preservation in Duke's name. I think that would mean more to him than flowers. Flowers die, the land is forever!

This really sucks. Duke was only 53 years old.

I never knew him. Just saw posts on the boards. I did serv under him at "Into the Wilderness." Being a lowly 2nd sergeant, I had no contact. I do know he'd been in the hobby a long time.

Mike Schaffner posted the following message concerning Duke's passing io the "Scrivener's Mess" list server. With his permission I have added it to this thread:

Many of you have heard of the very recent death of David Culberson. I've posted below some details from another website for anyone in the area who might be able to use them.

I know that I will personally miss him. He had a passion for history and the hobby that led him to be irascible at times, especially on-line. But it more frequently led him to support and encourage others who he sensed shared his deep feelings for America, its heritage, and its culture, as well as for right and justice generally.

On several occasions I had the honor of serving with him in the
field. Sometimes that can be just a figure of speech, but he
actually did make me feel honored to be on the same field, whether it was as my commander at McDowell in 2003, the enemy leader who attacked us so creatively and audaciously at "War on the James", or the regimental commander I clerked for at Recon III.

He is a loss for the hobby generally, and of course more importantly and specifically for his family and community. As "Scriveners" we owe him a particular gratitude, for to the extent that I have made any contribution to this field of inquiry it was much because of his support and encouragement.

Some day we must all go where he now leads us. Until that time, we will miss him, be inspired by him, and strive to meet his standards of honor and integrity.

Requiescat in pace, Duke.

Indeed a sad notice. I first met Duke many years ago at Cedar Creek when we did one of the first all night picketts. I was his first sgt and we all had a great time. That set the stage for many of us with more authentic style of events. I was also on his staff at McDowell one year and had many many great conversations with him in person and via e-mail.

I am truly sorry to hear of his death and send prayers for him and his family and friends. There is now another vacant chair.
