THE NEW STATE OF KANAWHA.
The people of Northwestern Virginia (the 39 counties now openly adhering to the Union) voted last week on the question of being set off from the Old Dominion and formed into the new State of Kanawha. So far as we have returns, a large majority voted for the new State.

I have to admit, if nothing else West Virginia is easier to spell. "In 1915, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled that West Virginia owed Virginia over $12 million in pre-separation debt. The final debt payment was made in 1939." http://www.wvtourism.com/spec.aspx?pgID=80#STATEHOOD

For a really great set of articles about WV statehood see

For Gallia and other southern Ohio counties once bordering Virginia, June 20, 1863, was a happy day indeed since we were no longer on the border.
