The Black Flower is the best Civil War novel I've ever read... and possibly the best novel I've read, period. How do Bahr's other novels compare? Browsing Amazon.com, I got sidetracked by the large number of novels that are subtitled "A Novel of the Civil War." There seem to be dozens. I wonder why?

I agree completely regarding the Black Flower as the best Civil War novel I've read, and I've read a bundle of them. The funny part to me is that my 75 year old mother recommended it to me after she read it and liked it. And she's never reenacted a single day. A visit to Franklin and the site of the book this past October only stimulated the positive thoughts about the book. Phil McBride The Alamo Rifles |

I've read both "The Black Flower" and "Year of Jubilo" and enjoyed both. Have not read -- nor seen -- "The Judas Field" but will keep an eye peeled for it.

I've noticed in a all of his books he throws in a hint of the "supernatural" referring to spirits and such, and I could understand why as I believe people where very superstitious (sp)back in that time. Kindest regards;

I've read The Black Flowerand thought it was excellent! The Judas Fieldhas it's moments, but i don't think it reads quite as easily as the other. It has a lot of flashback style of writing, if you like that kind of writing. He definitely doesn't over romanticize anything to do with the combat scenes..very graphic. Hope that helps some. Niel I was just thinking of that. Yes that is true, as he describes the combat as being very graphic and horrific. Regards; Harold

I got a copy in Dec as my monthly selection from Zooba.com (all books $9.99) and I finished it last week. If you dint know the history of the battle of Franklin, I dont think the book would make very sense to a reader. Its a very interesting book and distinctively written. Mr Bahr certainly has a point of view about the Civil War and what it meant. Kent Dorr - Ohio Winter Quarters "Devils Own Mess" |
