Are you sure the kids aren't dead? It's like Children of the Corn meets Village of the Damned. Wednesday Addams evoked more humanity!

Dave: Are you sure the kids haven't finished off the bottle of Lynchburg's finest? The one on the left looks like me after my last kidney stone........

Hey, Give these kids a break. They've got two or three adults telling them they don't dare move, upon pain of various terrible punishments. If I was a kid, and somebody was telling me I couldn't move for thirty seconds, I'd be frowning too!

I'm pretty sure they all are (by now, I mean). But that's a good question. My gut instinct is no, but then a lot of times my gut's gotten me into trouble. So it's anyone's guess. But if he's not, he's a pretty laid back sorta hound. I'm wondering if the children were told not to blink, but the dog didn't understand English, and did it instead. All I know is I've been a lot of help on this one. BTW, Anyone who's had a period photograph taken with children would understand that look. It may have been the third or fourth attempt for a good picture, and of course they're all standing there holding their breath while the photographer is counting down. Wild eyed, blank stares, really quite pretty when one's used to looking at children's photographs of the period. Linda. --Last edited by Linda Trent on 2008-02-17 20:12:26 --

I don't recall where I read or heard this so forgive me on that point.. but I seem to recall that when pets were involved they would try to get the photo taken while the animal was sleeping so that it wouldn't move during the photo.

I have the hardest time getting my 4 to all stand still, smile or at least look towards teh camera when the picture is taken... and that only takes a second. I cant even imagine getting them to all stand still for a minimum of 30 seconds lol.

At Sept Storm, I had an image made and when we went back to pick it up, Mr Daley was having an image made of his son. We watched as they had the boy stand there for a 10 - 13 second exposure and every time just as the guy was ready to close the camera the boy would move. I don't know if they ever got a clear shot of him. And I think we watched them try 3 or 4 attempts.

I had the honor a few years ago to portray the mother of Abby Walker's little girl Holly. Holly was about 11 years old and has Down's Syndrome, and I have to admit that she was a real trooper. She was always so happy, even sitting for the photographer. We were fortunate to have Tim Parson, my hero of wet plate, and he was patient and excellent. He's not happy till he gets perfection! Here are a few modern wet plate photographs that he took during The Inn at Peak's Mill, and Shaker Village 2004. http://lindatrent.homestead.com/ParsonPhotos.html Again, these are MODERN wet plate photographs. A lot of the time it wasn't Holly who did the moving. Linda --Last edited by Linda Trent on 2008-02-23 18:56:07 --

I know just what ya'll mean. My five year old son will probably be 21 before he'll be able to sit still long enough for Wendell Decker to take his image. Part of it is his Asperger's Syndrome, but as Bob Collett can attest, he just doesn't stand still long enough for anyone or anything. I even tried to explain the difference between Nick Sekela's goods and the rest of the sutler crap, and that didn't even impress him enough to stop.

I know where you are coming from Ross, my 10 y/o stepdaughter has Aspergers as well so we are travelling that route now. Only thing she will ever sit still for is Spongebob and that's it.
