All,

I came a crossed this image of Gen. Halleck and was surprised to see him wearing Lt. General Straps.   I looked around but could not find anything stating that he was either promoted to that rank or was brevetted. Can anyone shed some light on this?

The stars look to be about the same size, but in an image of Grant, the middle star is bigger on his.

So could the 3 stars of the same size just be a way to designate Chief of Staff or General in Chief, US Army which Halleck was promoted to before Grant became Lt Gen.

Here is another image that is listed as Maj Gen Henry Halleck, but also shows him with 3 stars.

Mark,

This has nothing to do with the rank insignia, but the profile photograph has a strong likeness with a modern day Gene Hackman.  Nice images.

While I can't help much on the straps, I find it interesting to note that he appears to be holding a McDowell cap in the second image.

Are you sure there are three stars on the straps of the second picture?  By the distance between them, it looks to me like there would only be two stars on the strap.

It's my guess that both pics were taken during the same photo session.
