“State workers will not reveal the location of the new possible shipwreck to prevent looters from discovering the site.”

That is a legitimate concern.  There was a similar incident adjacent to Fort Morgan at the mouth of Mobile Bay.  I’m not certain that it was a Civil War ship but it was definitely wooden.  It was washed up on shore after a storm.  Before the various agencies could determine which had jurisdiction and who was going to do what, souvenir hunters descended on the wreck chain saws in hand.  Sad!!!!!!!!

"...chain saws in hand."

The thought of that just churns my gut.

I'll have to show this one to my wife. Her gg-grandfather Dyer Crowell was a blockade runner in the Galveston area.
Thanks for posting!

The Will o' the Wisp could be seen from 69th and Seawall Blvd when the water is clear. I lived about a block from the beach and used to walk on the Seawall near there quite often. A friend used to fly his plane over it and said the outline was quite visible from the air. Shrimpers said there was something there that would always snag their nets.
I wish them luck on this latest find.
