While surfing Smugmug.. I saw this photo:

I think it was the hat or cap that he is wearing that just caught me.  And the beard.. the combination for some reason gives him an elfish appearance.

That 1st guy's got a pretty sweet lid. I don't think the second one's mamma knew he'd jined the cavalry! He looks like he's about 12.

The first image appears to have been taken when getting cool/cold secondary to him wearing the scarf and wearing his night-cap and his lid/forage to keep warm.

Anyhow..nice image.

Is the Reb also carrying an 1842 Springfield?  Looks like one, or possibly and earlier pumpkin-slinger due to the wide band near the muzzle.
