Ken and Hank and others

Thanks for the responses.

I am glad that the way I had EBUFU defined works, but like Hank suggested it can be considered a loose definition that can be translated "By US" in different ways "For Us"..

Thanks again.

You are welcome Greg.  Hank is correct...it is a loose term.

Chris, no harm and no enemies here.

We are a bit different here aren't we? We set up places everybody on the spectrum can play and ask them to maintain decorum and what a surprise, it works.

I know my "job" as a mod has been a very pleasant experience here as I have to rarely put that hat on and am usually a happy spectator or participant in the discussions more than anything.

Like it or not, how many people see Civil War fora strictly as a source of entertainment? It may be surprising the number of people who enjoy these on-line quarrels. They enjoy them so much their contributions are designed to keep a squabble going or to stir up the next one. Their forte is the argument, the more passionate and strident the better. The argument is more important than the issue.

In other words, they're TROLLS...

Just a note, disagreements that occur on other boards need to stay there. Let's not go there as it is not in the spirit of this forum. Now back to the regularly scheduled discussion.

As with any term, EBUFU had a particular, specific meaning when it was coined, and having become popular and well known, was watered down according to the needs and desires of others as they used it to justify their own events, standards, etc.

As I understand it, EBUFU was to mean more than simply an event not for personal profit, or simply put on by reenactors.

It also included the idea that the needs and desires of the reenactors participating were the primary focus, rather than the sponsors or the spectators (though spectators might be present at times).  That one would put on the mantle of a "real Civil War soldier" from the time one left the parking lot to the time one returned there to go home, and the real world would be left behind, to be replaced by being in the moment of the 1860's.  That money would be raised for preservation of battlefields, etc, instead of for personal gain by a few.  That anachronisms were to be left behind in deference to gaining an insight into period conditions, be they pleasant or hardship.

I know that when I plan to attend an EBUFU event, I'm accepting the challenge of stretching my limits in some manner.  That aspect has never failed nor disappointed.

If anything has be usurped, it is only the "word" EBUFU, not the spirit of that word.
