I'm weighing in here waaaaay late, but...  I agree about not buying anything at the sutlers.  The problem is, there is so much more wrong than there is right at any one of them.  Even the so-called "approved" sutlers don't always carry only period correct items, you have to know how to pick and choose.

I always advise people to try to save up and buy the very best as it allows for growth in the hobby.  If you start out going to mainstream events and want to progress into more progressive/hardcore events you'll have the right stuff, and won't need to start over from scratch; and if you don't ever want to go that route, you'll still have excellent clothes and gear.

But it really is Caveat Emptor, especially at these larger events where sutlers sell not only to reenactors, but also to the general public.  It's wise not to buy without assistance from someone who knows the products you're looking for.

Have fun!!!
