Folks,
Besieged by feelings of guilt after apparently bringing not one, not two, but three threads on this forum to a grinding halt (Last Weekend at Cedar Creek; Harper's Weekly "coverage" of McDowell 2007 and September Storm Pics), I hereby make this humble effort to launch a new topic of discussion:
Who is coming to Remembrance Day in Gettysburg this coming weekend, and other than the usual parade, what is your unit doing to render homage to those who many of those do what we do in the ranks of CW reenacting?
Rather apt, I think, considering that this is Memorial Day. God bless our veterans... past, present and future!
Julio

Hope to see you!

Hosted by: The Living History Guild (Member-Potomac Legion)

You are invited to participate in a memorial march honoring units engaged in operations July 3, 1863 in the vicinity of Big Round Top. Additional information will be forwarded to interested persons upon request.  Slots are limited to the first 50 and are open to all Potomac Legion member units. Non PL members wishing to attend  may request participation and be sponsored by a PL member. Once the maximum number of participants is reached, your name will be placed on a wait list and you will be notified in order of requests received to fill openings caused by cancellations.

This year the march is slightly less than 2 miles via the road network and in addition there are two foot trails in the vicinity of Big Round Top we will be traversing. The trails are fair, but there may be some blowdowns we will have to work around. Our activities will finish about the same time the parade begins downtown and we currently have no plans to join it

Previous march routes:
• Culp’s Hill to the Peach Orchard (5 miles)
• Reynolds Avenue to Barlow’s Knoll with emphasis on the artillery actions (2.7 miles)
• Peach Orchard, Wheatfield, Devils Den and Little Round Top (3.6 miles)
• Culp’s & Cemetery Hills (3.2 miles)

If you are interested in being a volunteer narrator and doing a battle history for one of the units listed below,  please contact Doug Oakes oldsoldier51@yahoo.com. A maximum of 10 units will be scheduled in order to allow us to finish the march prior to the expiration of our permit.

Unit
18th Pennsylvania Cavalry
5th NY Cavalry
1st Vermont Cavalry
118th Pennsylvania
119th Pennsylvania
12th Pennsylvania Reserves
5th Pennsylvania Reserves
9th Massachusetts
10th Pennsylvania Reserves
1st Vermont Brigade
6th Maine
49th Pennsylvania
5th Wisconsin

March route begins near the picnic area on South Confederate Avenue and finishes at the cul-de-sac on Howe Avenue.
At each stop the unit’s actions at Gettysburg will be given and the Roll of Honor read. In addition, a small flag will be laid in the name of the state that furnished the source of enlistments.

Participants will park on the RIGHT HAND side in the cul-de-sac on Howe Avenue and be shuttled to the start

Our permit allows weapons only within the confines of the march outlined above, so be advised, outside those limits you are subject to NPS rules, which forbid the carrying of firearms and can result in the confiscation of your weapon.

POC: Douglas Oakes, oldsoldier51@yahoo.com, 607-734-0458

Registration:
• Respond via email to oldsoldier51@yahoo.com by Nov 15,  2003.
• No fee, but we do need a headcount for logistics support.

If you've never done this little walk, I think it's a much better alternative to the parade(thing)

Grumpy,

Do you think Doug & Terri's annual march will have less Imperial Storm Troopers, Japanese Marines, Waffen SS, Wookies, Doughboys, Trekkies, CMT kilts, pipers, and WACs than the circus vomitus in town? I sure hope so.

I'd say you can count on it. I do plan on getting inot town for an adult beverage before I head up the road. Maybe I'll sit in front of the Republican National Committee building for a while...

If you can put down your butterknife long enough to grab a beer, let's ease over to the USCC museum for a few moments. G'burg may be way too crowded with the uberfarben to get a brew or visit a museum, but we shall see. Are you wearing those stylish Ray-Bans or retro Blu Blockers to keep your eyes from bleeding? smile/eek.gif

if you see me... feel free to say hi to me im sure every one of you could pick me out of a crowd lol... okay... ill be in a black dress with lots of white trim, black bonnet and a sage green and black trim paletot... any help? probably not. ill have 4 munchkins following behind me too.

I asked this question in the Szabo Forum and I think it would be useful to repeat it here:
Can someone in the Gettysburg area inform the rest of the reenacting community about the cost of a gallon of unleaded gasoline there?
It might make a big difference to a lot of us!
Thanks in advance.

Julio,

I travelled on Route 81 yesterday, about 15 miles west of Gettysburg. Gas was selling for about $3.00 per gallon.

Regular unleaded is currently in the $3.099 to $3.129 most everywhere here. I would expect, knowing the local merchants in Gettysburg, to see a price jump just for the weekend. I'd buy outside of town a few miles if you have a choice.

Grumpy Dave,

Tell me you aren't saying the local merchants would attempt to overcharge the folks attending Remembrance Day. I find that difficult to believe. Yeah right!   smile/!moon.gif

The fuels at Sheetz at the US 30 and US 15 interchange is usually priced reasonably close to market value, and not into the G'burg rip-off mindset. Since we are in Pennsyltucky, I fully expect all those Penna residents to show up with plenty of Germanic apple-pastry vicutals even if no one outside of Keystoneland can pronounce the names.

Thank you, folks, for the information about gasoline prices in Gettysburg.
It will be interesting to see if there is, indeed, a boost in prices there to take advantage of all the folks coming into town for the weekend.
As for me, I think I shall fill up my tank in the Washington DC area, where the last time I refueled, prices were in the $2.85 to $2.90 area... but of course that was about two weeks ago and who knows how the market will have fluctuated since then, though without a doubt, it was probably upwards.
So I will make sure I have enough fuel for the round trip to Gettysburg before I leave home on Nov. 16.
