Are any of you guys planning to attend "Assault on Allegheny"? It's being held on the weekend of July 24-26, a little west of McDowell, Virginia.

Bill, if you look on Mess No.1's website, we planned to do this event.  But, we are now reconsidering because there's no true federal structure yet.  The CS side seems to be okay, but not the Feds.  We like to attend events where we know who we are going to be at least sixth months out so we can study.  I guess that makes us particular, but we've been pretty good at sorting what's best for us.

ken,

I was hopeing the event would generate a reasonable number of participants. There's not a lot of campaign (Move here, go there) events on the schedule this year.

Did you express your concerns to the sponsors?

Well, we usually let folks know if we are coming and how many, thus the "tentative" tag on the site.  We really wanted to do another WV event, but it's quickly loosing it's appeal for us.

We get invited to dozens of events every year and of course can't do them all.  I guess that's why we are picky.  But ET has talked with Denton some.  Eric is usually our front man for telling someone if we are going or why we aren't. We haven't got that far yet.

Ken, I don't blame you a bit. If the event organizers can't answer the who are we portraying?, who's in command questions?; how would it go with, where do we park?, where do we get water?, do you have the land?, questions.

Exactly Dave.  We are a well planned group who likes to attend well planned events.  Not that this one won't be!!!  It's just that other events will come up that might be better for us, and cramming info inside of two months is not fun.  Can't get it out to the boys in time.  I hope Allegheny is awesome, but the timing is killing it for us.

Grumpy,

At the battalion meeting, the "let's move on" signal was given right after two seconds "an hour further drive than McDowell" was stated, and that didn't include numerous mentions of the great Shenandoah '62 disappointment. At the unit level, a prospective event was already on the ballot long before Allegheny began to jell from rumor to concept.

"Shenandoah '62" was a delightful event.  If half the energy that went into trashing it beforehand went into -- anything else, really, not even supporting it -- it might have been even nicer.

Bill, to answer the original question, I heard that Buffington's regiment, the 3rd USV, has made this a "max effort."  For something like one of Chris's events, Scott can bring 150-200 guys.  He brought a hundred to the last McDowell.  So it looks like there should be a few guys in blue to shoot at, anyway

I just noticed that Assault on Allegheny has been upgraded on the A-C Forum to one of their EBUFU events for this season. The other four events are: Into the Piney Woods, Race to Knoxville, The Lost Tribe, and Bummers.

It looks like I'll make two out of the five this year. Sorry!

I'm planning on going, at this point. It's a very beautiful part of WV and even if it falls short of an event such as my all time favorite, Payne's Farm, it's still far and away better than any mainstream event in WV that I could attend. I'm also getting some interest from a couple people in my mainstream unit, 1st WV, that might take this as a first step into the campaigner world...since they know I'm going and it's reasonably close for them. The chance to march on the old road itself and be around the original ground/fort will be neat.

Neil,

would this be considered a "bridging event" in your case.  I really hate to use that word, but it seems it may apply.  I'm not knocking the event and there is an outside chance Mess No.1 attends, it's just that we believe an event should have all of it's ducks in a row before it's launched.  We got to know WV very well with RM.  It's really  pretty country.

Ken,

Well, I guess if you want to use that term and it fits..so be it! I'm just seeing it as a chance for me to bring a couple people that, up to this point, have been hesitant about doing any campaign style events, but have plainly not been completely happy with the mainstream events. If I could "recruit" some more people into the correct way of doing things, then that would certainly be worth it.

Also, if we get to march the old turnpike, camp out under the stars (if there are any), have a reasonably good recreation of the battle itself, and spend time looking at the original site, I would definitely consider that to be a decent event. If it turns out to be imperfect in some way, at least the scenery will somewhat make up for that and besides, complaining is the soldier's favorite activity!

Looking forward to Bummers. maybe one of the guys I bring to this will get inspired and come along to that as well.

I plan on going, and am much looking forward to a little mountain climbing, if that there be. I believe it's on the CVG's '09 schedule as a Max Effort event -- as Federal...

That's great news Charlie.  With the 3rd USV and the CVG providing the blue, I won't feel so guilty for going gray.

I mean uniform-wise.  Hair-wise I've done gone already.

Yeah, that is good news Charles! Having the CVG there will give me someone reliable to fall in with, if I'm acceptable to them. Looks as though I might drag one, younger, triathloner (won't have to worry about him making it up the mountain) from the mainstream WV boys to come with me.

Neil,

I know for a fact you & your friend would be welcome in Co. A of the CVG.  I can't speak for the other companies... so just come straight to company A if you're looking for a "home", how 'bout?
