This year I went up and actually participated in this event rather than spectated.  I took myself and 3 other guys plus my son with me.  We went up for the Friday school day presentation where we were able to do 15 min presentations through the day to local middle school kids and their parents/teachers.

We arrived at the location on Friday morning with a slight sprinkle in the air, but it cleared and the day remained overcast and cool (about 70ish) through the day with a 15min rain storm around noon.

The school day ended about 2pm, and we had some time until we needed to set up camps.

We found a nice corner along the back of the property behind the Smith land office and setup our she-bang along the fence.  Dug our firepit and commenced to relaxing for the evening.

Saturday morning came early and the boys were up by 5:15am because someone failed to tell the sun to wait a few more hours before rising.  Even though this was a local civil war days type event, we were up and cooking breakfast and boiling coffee.  We then relaxed and waited for the rest of the "campers" to get up.  Camps weren't going to be open to the public until 10am.  We spent the time doing a period Bible discussion and checking the rifles to get the moisture out of them.  Somewhere around 8am the Federals began to stir in their camps.

Eventually the camps opened and the spectators came through, we talked to those who came close enough to our camp.  But most seemed content to walk through the heavy camps and then veer away from where we were.  Even though we put a couple guys out near the entrance to the camps to direct them back towards us.

We finally had a small crowd gather around us and we did a demonstration about the uniforms and weapons and gears that we carried.  Our camp life and then we did a firing demonstration for them.  Then it was time for us to form up for the skirmish.

Since we were the only infantry there on the confederate side(12 total).  We were given some freedom in the scenario.  We chose to build a set of works in a location on the battlefield, and also set up "rifle pits".  We then went forward to the outer fence line across the road from the Federals and set up a picket position to wait for them.
At the appointed time we opened the skirmish with a couple of taunts and some firing in the retreat to draw the federals towards us.

The battle ebbed and flowed and the federals came at our works a couple of times taking large numbers of casaulties as they did.  Eventually the battle subsided, and we came out of our works to see what we could get from the dead and wounded.

Then we cleared weapons, and instead of going back to camp, a couple of us walked up along the spectator line and answered any questions they might have.  We talked to a couple of the people we saw before the battle and asked them what they thought..

All in all it wasn't a bad day.  And as we packed up and called it a day for us, we stopped by and had ourselves a little bit of ice cream..
