This year, the First Battalion, ANV will be attending Cedar Creek in honor of our fallen comrade, Lance Corporal Jordan Chrobot; who was killed in Afghanistan on September 26th. He was twenty-four years old.

Jordan joined the 48th. Virginia while he was still in high school. He attended our events on a regular basis, until he joined the Marines three years ago. He had already completed a tour of duty in Iraq and was due home from Afghanistan in December. He was buried with his rifle-musket at his side.

What sad news. I know the 48th/ANV will do him proud.

I was planning on being at Cedar Creek, but sometimes life gets in the way, and I have a service call for work that I am making to a customer this weekend.

Bill, I saw the story about Jordan in the Texas newsletter.  I remember him from a couple of events we did together as a bttn.  I had a link to the newstory about him.

Cedar Creek was a strange event for me. I was sick as a dog and spent most of the weekend in my tent. I never got close to any of the scenarios.

Sad to say, the weather reports reduced the First Battalion's numbers by about two-thirds. We had only about twenty people on site.

Given the reduced numbers, the Memorial Formation for Jordan Chrobot went well. The members of the 48th. Virginia acted as the Color Guard. Jordan's wife, mother, and stepfather attended the ceremony. The ANV Headquarters supplied the music and the ANV's Commander, General Jake Jennette, a former Marine, spoke to the family.

Funny, I've always said I've never attended a reenactment I didn't enjoy. I can't say that any more. I wouldn't have missed the event for anything, but there was no fun for me last weekend.

Thanks for the update.

Sound like you should of been on morning report for being sick and sent to the doctors quarters for an "amputation."

You did the wise thing and stayed in your tent.

Take care.

I heard from Nick that the weather was less than delightful. Sounds like something just short of what we had at Tunnel Hill during the Georgia floods.

I stumbled upon this forum so I hope it is OK to post.

I attended the 2009 Battle of Cedar Creek Reenactment this past weekend as a spectator.  It was my first viewing of a reenactment and I had a great time even though the weather was less than desirable. I met or talked with a bunch of reenactors over the weekend either in the camps or between events: 66th Ohio, 20th Maine, 1st Tennessee, 6th Ohio Cavalry, 3rd US Regular Infantry.  If anyone is interested in my pictures (although not the best by any means), here is a link:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/37164973@N05/sets/72157622512835337/

Looking back, there was one slightly humorous thing at Cedar Creek. (At least, it seems humorous now!) I dragged myself out of bed to conduct Jordan's Formation. I put on the fancy officer's frockcoat, sash, sword belt, black armband, and shined brogans. (I had brought along a complete kit of clean, dry, and shiny stuff to wear for the Formation.) One small detail I forgot. I was still wearing my knitted sleeping cap.

I set up the reversed rifle, brogans, and slouch hat display and got the troops in line and nobody said a word about my cap. I conducted the entire ceremony wearing my "Munchkin" hat with the point on top. I never realized I was wearing the cap until the Chaplain asked us to remove our headgear for a prayer. I felt like the world's biggest idiot. Jake Jennette was nice enough to assure me that nobody; but me, noticed or cared. I still felt like the world's biggest idiot!

Dan,

I forgot to add. I see that you are listed in Cincinnati...if you are looking for a Civil War reenactment unit...try the 6ovi. We are based out of Cincinnati and have memebers from Dayton, Columbus, Northern Ky, etc, etc.
Here's the link:

I tried the link again and it seems to work for me.  I even logged out and tried without my username.  If you want, do a 'People' search on flicker.com for "queencitysurvey".  It will pull up my profile; click it then click on the 'Battle of Cedar Creek Renenactment 2009' set.

I was able to view the images.  Great shots you got there.

Bill, he was able to get a nice shot of Ron and the boys marching somewhere..

You don't need to apologize for th pictures...the captured a lot of the action.
As for units to join:  I can personally vouch for the company and men of the 6th Ohio who I served with for three years before moving to NY.
