This is a quote taken from an artilce written by Juanita Leisch Jensen in the Fall 2006 issue of "The Watchdog".

"Can you-and will you-educate someone other than yourself on the truth about the past better this time than last time?"

Might be something to think about at next Living History or Spectator Event you attend.

Bill

I like to think that as I learn more and read more that my responses to spectator questions or even those within my group become more accurate.

I know that 8 years ago when I started doing this, I went based off of limited knowledge or what I thought was right.  But as I have gone back and read magazine articles, books, looked over more photos closer etc..etc..  I want to think I am getting a clearer picture of what is out there.

Bill,

A great quote!  I would certainly hope the serious living historian practices it.

Ken,

The article was addressed to more than serious living historians. I will quote the first paragraph:

"In my opinion, there ought to be only one minimum standard of historical accuracy in living history impressions, and it should apply alike whether you spent one dollar or ten thousand dollars on your impression, whether this is your first event, or you have been a living historian since 1863 (the date of the first Civil War reenactment I know of that involved use of reproductions made for the purpose)

Can you - and will you - educate someone other than yourself on the truth about the past better this time than last time?"

My take is you don't have to spend $10,000 on your kit to tell the truth. I have a great story about a group portraying a Confederate Artillary unit I saw in front of the Ear Wax Museum in Getysburg and, the conversation that perpetuated between myself and one of their members.

A gutta percha sack coat and forage cap wouldn't keep you dry If I'm attending an event.
