One of my co workers was discussing her great grandmother's wedding dress and she stated it was black and could have been a dark green in color.  She was told that it was the custom that the wedding dress would be a dark color.  We are interested to see if anyone knew if this was the case.  I know most of the wedding dress that I have seen were white.

I asked my wife about your question. She said that wedding dresses, of the period, were often of a dark color. She doubted  the dress would have been black. The dark green would have been a good bet.

The average woman of the mid 19th century would just wear her best dress she owned. The wealthy would have a special dress, but very few I have seen were white..one or two ivory over the years, but usually a dark color.
