Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America Through Galveston Island. On exhibit through October 11 at the state history museum in Austin, but then I understand it will travel the country.

"Explores the dramatic story of Galveston, Texas as a little known gateway to America that provided an entry point to over 100,000 immigrants between the mid-1800s and 1924."

It may provide some great background for impressions, particularly southern. I have not yet seen it but will report on it when I do.
