I recently purchased a Period Impressions pattern # 311 to make a dress for my little girls.  I have some experience.  I have made clothes before using patterns such as Simplicity.  My problem is that the directions for the period dress are very vague.  I’m not sure if I should lay out the pattern on the true side or the wrong side of the fabric.  Right now I am trying to make a mock dress out of muslin just to get the feel for it.  If anyone could help me or give any advice, it will be much appreciated.

You've started right, cutting a practice to start. I've not used this pattern, unfortunately. I suggest going over to Elizabeth Stewart Clark's forum as there are several very knowledgable seamstresses there who may be familiar with the pattern or at least the company and can help you.
