Most of the 150th events that will occur will be military-centered. Is anyone planning citizen-centered events or citizen-centered actitivies at the various events for the 150th? If so, what are your plans? What challenges are you finding?

Some of us in Texas are planning home front events interpreting the effects of the war at home. We're starting off with the secession vote in February (the decision to secede in Texas was voted on by the public as a referendum) to "set the stage" and then will repeat 1861 in 2011. We haven't decided yet what the scenario will focus on for 2011, there are too many to choose from.

Do we know if there will be any type of 150th event around Harpers Ferry.  I think they do an election event each year..

Harpers Ferry started alternating between 1860 Election Day and John Brown a few years back. I have participated in both but not recently. I used to do Frederick Roeder as tavern and confectionary owner on Election Day. The temperance march to the tavern was always a fun scene.

I have always wanted to see Harper's Ferry. I'd love to go during an event.

Check with Atlantic Guard Soldier Aid Society web site at for info about each years event. I know many of the members and the president Colleen Formby is an old friend. They would be glad to have you as a guest. This year it appears to be John Brown so maybe next year will be Election Day.

I'm in the mi-atlantic area... and this year IS the 150th of John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry. The NPS is hosting TWO events in Oct. that they would love volunteers for. John Brown's Legacy and At All Times Ready: The US Marines on the 10 & 11 Oct. AND the 150th Commemoration 16-18 Oct. Contact Melinda Day for information 304-535-6029
or "Melinda_Day at nps.gov "

Well that definately is a citizen-centered event, isn't it? I'm already booked up for October . I'll keep an eye out for events after March, that is when my calendar will be a little clearer.

If you attend, please give us AAR!
