![]() http://www.civilwarphotos.net/files/images/239.jpg I noticed that the Sgt on the left of the group and in the middle (standing), their chevrons appear darker than the others. Anyone know what might be the reason, if they are infantry wouldn't all the chevrons be blue.. or could these be newer sgts so they haven't had time to fade?? When I zoomed in, the sgt sitting on the left looks to have a cross pinned to his coat. And when I looked by his neck, there appears to be something pinned on his collar too, but I can't make out what it is. --Last edited by lhsnj on 2007-02-01 12:45:44 --

Federal Chevrons were made by several contractors. And, you got what was issued. I see three distinct different stripe shades in that picture. Did you notice not all have trouser stripes? --Last edited by grumpydave on 2007-02-07 12:52:28 --

I noticed that some didn't appear to have them, but I wasn't quite sure if they weren't there or if the angle they were standing at was hiding them.

The seated Corporal and Sergeant, right and left certianly don't have them. Trouser striping is an item required for a Federal Quartermaster to have on hand(Especially in this very static camp situation). Sewing's a beeyatch. The feller in the center of the rear row, either has his left foot in a hole or has found where the QM hides the whiskey. --Last edited by grumpydave on 2007-02-07 21:10:22 --

There's a bent stick that seems to be holding up the common tent on the left. I've never seen any reenactors try that trick.

Bill I noticed that bent stick too, but what are those "planks" that appear to be at the head of the tent?

What a shame it is those photographs on that site have no location, source, caption, unit, photographer, title or any other indentification information. One glance at the vegetation would suggest something during the Peninsular Campaign, but the source information has evidently been lost to time, or laziness. I like the hardtack box, and the suitcase. We don't see many period suitcases, and that one is under considerable stress as a "camp chair." Notice how neither of the two folding chairs resemble the crap typically sold on skinner row. Nice ceegars, too.

This is a photo of the 93rd NYI Co D at Bealeton, VA in August 1863. Rob Griffiths on the AC page gave me this information when I posted the photo over there: "A large version of this photograph is available at the LoC. The reproduction number is LC-DIG-cwpb-04033."

I scoured the high-res verison of this pic for details and found something interesting here. The photo below is a detail of the sergeant in the frock coat standing between the two officers. It looks like he has an enormous 1SGT's diamond on his right arm, but none on his left. I futzed around with enhancing the photo and I'm convinced that I'm not seeing wrinkles on the sleeve. EDITED to add the link, in case you get a red x. http://pirate.shu.edu/~myzieron/cwpix/1SGT.jpg Ron Myzie --Last edited by Ephraim_Zook on 2007-04-22 09:18:13 -- |

Nice Ron! But I still think I see two diamonds on him.

I see two diamonds. And, a look on his face that tells me he needs a trip to the sinks. He must be in the wrong 50% that day.

I didn't want to belabor this. Maybe I need a trip to the sinks, or new spectacles. But I can't see a diamond on his left sleeve to save my life. Thanks for looking, though. Ron Myzie ![]() |

Is it possible one came loose and he removed and simply had not had time to reattach it yet? I remember at Prelude our 1st Sgt. seemed to be repairing his stripes every chance he got as they were trying to come loose.

I'm definitely in the "two diamonds" group, too. On the left sleeve, only the "front" half of the diamond is visible (that's *not* the top stripe you're seeing curving up -- that's the left-sleeve's diamond).

I was and I think we did. Are you coming to the Chikamauge LH? I'll be in Tripp's company. Also, did you get the PM I sent you? --Last edited by toptimlrd on 2007-04-24 12:24:00 --

Here is the photo with some lines across to match up the sides. I still only see the 1 diamond. ![]()
