This image conveys the true essence of a jaunty cavalryman. This is Francis J. Lewis, Company A Eleventh Michigan Cavalry. He was commissioned a second Lt. at age 34 on Aug. 1 1863. He mustered Oct. 9 1863 and resigned March 17 1864.

Only eight months of service...apparently, he lost his jauntiness fairly quickly.  Possible he had served at a lower rank before, and just didn't take to being an officer.
