  Hallo!

When this body is dead, and I am forced to move on...

My body will be set up as a mannequin at events, dressed up and kitted out.

Curt,

A bunch of dead people could help the attendance at any number of events and they wouldn't leave early!

Happy holidays!  smile/dynamic/madnoel.gif

Gents:

As far as "too old for the ranks", there are plenty of documented cases of soldiers in their 40's and 50's in the ranks. Without making it a separate study, one does find quite often, that during the war soldiers over 40 seemed to have gotten a large proportion of disability discharges.

I guess the army took the perspective that they were welcome as long as they could hack it.

One of those things that's been discussed (and cussed) before. IF we start putting an upper age limit on the HOBBY we'll loose a lot of people. The young kids don't participate because of 1) lack of/no interest 2) money 3)school 4) fumes (car fumes & per-fume. If you want to play, can afford it and have the time, why not???

  Hallo!

 Quite true...

It often seems that by the time a lad has the free money and free time to play, they are beyond the age and weight "demographic" for the majority of CW (or any war) soldiers.

And as we well know, age and weight have been both mud to throw in the "Hardcore/Authentics' face as well as an excuse for "Farbery" in clothing, gear, and activities.

In the end "age" is a relative concept (relatively speaking).
 ;)

There is Real Age and then there is Chronologic Age, complicated by distance from the viewer.
Real Age is how "old" one's body looks and functions at.
 Chronologic Age is calendar age.

Meaning, folks "age" at different rates and concepts. Some in their 30's look and function to be in their 60's.  Some in their 60's look and function to be in their 30's.

Well, lads and lasses, there is no longer any mystery in which age category I fall.  I was standing in line at the local post office waiting to buy some stamps late last week. This black female in front of me stepped out of line when it was her turn to talk to the postal employee behind the counter.  She turned to me and said, “I always let the elderly go ahead of me.”

Hmmm???????

A few years ago, (Before I hit the magic age.) I stopped in Micky-D's to grab a cup of coffee. The young man behind the counter got my coffee and charged me only fifteen cents; informing me that was the "Senior's" price.

  Hallo!

I had a pard who father's line suffered from premature aging, and no male in the line had lived beyond 51.
At age 37 he was asked for his Ohio Golden Buckeye Card for seniiors over age 60.
At at our unit Christmas party, the 78 year old father of a member looked at him and said  "Thank God I am not the oldest person here!"

Another pard, had similar "problems,"  in is early 40's he was often mistaken for his mod to late 60's.

Might be a "The Curious Tale of Benjamin Button" thing.

Sir:

It wasn't too long ago when the "age or weight thing" of the Civil War soldier came into vogue. Surprisingly, there is plenty evidence that shows uniforms being issued in larger sizes. The one that comes to mind is that detachment of Ordinance in Troy NY, specifically requesting larger sizes, up to and including size 40.

The 20 year olds that started that fad a few years ago have become less vocal as they get on in years.

Nick,

LOL

It's my memory the Federal QM actually set up a shop to supply clothing and shoes for those soldiers who didn't fit the standard. True?   smile/indecis.gif

  Hallo!

It was set up at Schuylkill.

I get fooled myself.  I thought the pilot Chesley Sullenberger who crashed landed the plane in the Hudson River was 80.

 ;)

Academy Class of '72, flew F4's. Asked my cousin class of '82, flew F4's (Recce's, based in Victorville CA for awhile) if he knew Sully, and he said he was much older....

Yout...

I am 55 but my impression is that I am 30 with a heckuva lot of miles on me. I do wish that this extra weight around the middle would drop off as easily as it did in boot camp nearly 40 years ago. I just can't seem to get that "gaunt" look for some reason.

Dennis,

I can relate. I retired from the Army Reserve in 1999. When Uncle Sugar was looking over my shoulder, I did a pretty good job of keeping my weight down. Now, ten years later, it's a never ending battle. At our age, it's a hell of a lot easier to gain weight, then lose it.
