All,

I know I said that I was joining the 1st Md, but I was wondering if anybody could give me units in the MD,DE VA,PA areas that are campiagner/progressive oriented. I have also been looking at the 3rd MD Co. A, but I cant decide on which unit to join!! They dont have to be federal either, my great, great uncle fought in Co. I 7th VA Inf (Kempers brigade, Picketts division, wounded at Gettysburg). So any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if anybody on here is a member of either 1st or 3rd MD, tell me more about the units, like how campiagner/progressive oriented they are. Thanks in advance for the ideas and suggestions.

I don't know much about military units, but plenty of other reenactors on here do, so they can give lots of advice there.

But one way to decide would be to look at upcoming events that sound good, and see which of the units are planning to attend the events you'd like. The Authentic Campaigner forum lists some of the bigger and/or well known c/p/h events. If a unit isn't going to any of them, or is choosing mainstream events instead of c/p/h ones, and you want to focus on c/p/h events, they probably don't have the same mindset as you.

Also, if you're really into the c/p/h side of the hobby, you'll probably decide to do some traveling to take advantage of the few really good opportunities for c/p/h events. As a civilian, I wind up seeing at least some of the same people all over the country, from Georgia to Louisiana to Missouri to New York. Don't know if it's the same with the military, but you might find it practical to join a unit at a distance, so to speak, that you'd nonetheless fall in with when you meet them at events, instead of or in addition to a unit that's geographically close to where you live, if no geographically close unit wants to attend the top tier of c/p/h events.

Here's a link to the Potomac Legion's members page. Scroll down. The 1st Minnesota is in Marlyand. You'll find their contact information. I sent them your contact information. Someone from the 1st may contact you. They're a great bunch of guys, and they attend some first rate events. I've helped them with some Camp of Instructions and attended events eith them. You could do much worse.

Chris:
I know that I'm responding just a bit tardy on this subject but when I decided with all ernestness that I wanted to get into reenacting I searched scads of websites looking for a group near me and that did not seem "threatening" from the sense that their website or guidelines made it seem to lofty a venture.

The 2nd thing I did was begin to contact those units that looked like they would be a good fit for me.  What really sold me on my unit?  It was the responses from the members, their friendliness, their very candid responses to what to me now are some of the simplest questions without making me feel like I didn't know anything. (which I didn't)

Lastly, it was the personal invites to the company meeting where I was not treated as a stranger but welcomed with open arms, friendly chat and all the pards showing a genuine desire to make me feel welcome.  That clinched the deal...I was hooked and joined right up.

Now that I've relocated to the NYC area I've been doing the same thing and it is amazing how many groups don't respond but at the same time I would express that those that do exceed those that don't.  I even got an email last night from a group that is mailing me information without my even asking.  Needless to say, at present I'm impressed.  I wish you luck in your search.

From one greybeard to another (although I've shaved mine off for the present) thank you Dan.
It's really hard to believe how much I miss the 6th and the opportunities to honor those of the orginal blue & gray.

That would be great Eric.  I'm going to keep my membership with the 6th if they'll have me (that means I'll at least pay my dues) and if I can arrange vacation around an event or two I'll try to make it, especially if it isn't far from the SW Ohio area since my wife could visit her mother, our son is in Cincy, etc.

Being missed is one the highest complements an individual can receive.

Tom,

Who knows we may come out your way a little closer with an eastern event...?
