Our unit commander does not change.  What is meant by “does not change” is this guy is the administrative head of the unit.  He takes care of the real world arrangements concerning events attended.  In actuality, there are two of these people.  Administrative duty is shared by another paper pushing type who handles rosters, finances, and correspondence among unit members.  The commander takes care of correspondence with other units and higher headquarters.  That means while the commander is involved with palace politics the other admin guy is tasked with internal unit clerical affairs.  These two have to coordinate what each is doing.  Most of what they do goes on behind the scenes.  The person who is actually leading troops in the field may be neither of these.  Our unit is blessed by having a cadre of people who are proficient directing fire and maneuver.  The unit’s administrative leader(s) are informed who is going to be present at the upcoming event.  Leaders for the next event will be brevetted from this group.  The leadership positions get passed around among the guys who are interested.  It sounds odd but it works. At least it works for us.  Not everybody wants to lead.  Those that do get their opportunity.  This peculiar way of doing things was brought about by our unit members being scattered over four states.  The unit is divided along geographical lines into companies.  Two different event schedules are put out each year.  Each schedule contains events (memorial services, living histories, parades, reenactments) from each geographic division.  In an attempt to bring the entire unit together, a couple of events will be scheduled as close to the geographic center of the four state area as possible.
