With the season over for most of us, what winter project do you have planned. People talk about upgrades to the hobby, what do you have on the books. I'm in the process of building a Inkle Loom for the wife and after that a new card table. We like to set around and play cards. The table we have been using in the past is just to small. I'm mainstream so a nicer table is not out of bounds. I spent a lot of time in camp and camp furniture is important.

Besides the usual repair and maintenance jobs, I'd like to knock together a period ammo box for clerical supplies.  If I'm really ambitious, I might tackle an actual desk.

I intend to build some camp things. Rope Bed, Trunk, Table, and a few things to hide anything that I dont want to show.  If I get the forge redone, I am going to try to make all the iron fasteners.

More than likely I will blow all that off and get started on my flintlock rifle for next deer season

Well, I still need to obtain more equipment to complete  my CS impression, mainly leathers, but other than that, I've been drawn towards family geneology. Currently, I'm a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and have been invited to participate in our chapter's honor guard. I'm trying to decide what kind of flintlock to obtain. A Brown Bess, or a Charleville is out of the question due to cost, at least for now. Most of my Patriot ancestors were in the GA, SC, and NC Militias so I would think that a civilian arm would be more appropriate.

I've got a old ferrier forge myself, used it on some iron work on cannons. I shoot a 40 cal green mtn. barrel LNR lock with Davis set Triggers. Tiger maple. Hammered a knife or two. Love to have a trip hammer maybe in the next life.

this is an old farriers forge.  I got it off of my great aunt.  Now I am finally in a place where coal is readily available.  I want to make a rolled knife sometime, but starting with fixtures and brackets will suffice for now.

I have always wanted to build a Pennsylvania flintlock.  I have the book, but haven't had the time or space.  Now I have the time, just not the space.

Doug... I completely agree on a table. the worst is eating and having to get up to get something for a kiddo, and then someone walks by and there goes dirt in my food... or in one of the kids as they generally sit around the fire, on the ground and eat.

Kevin/Dulcie,

Down here where the ground slowly turns into a salt marsh there is an abundance of old timey dispensers of syrupy sweet philosophical tidbits  This is referred to as “blue haired wisdom.”  This, mostly claptrap, comes from heads covered with blue hair or none at all.  One of my favorite Trent Lott stories revolves around one of these little ageless blue haired ladies.  It seems sweet, precious, dear Miss Higgie became distressed because the local garbage collectors had scattered her garbage cans off to the other side of the street.  So, little Miss Higgie, beloved by all, retired school teacher that she was, picks up her phone and calls her all time favorite student, Senator Trent Lott, in Washington, DC.  Miss Higgie proceeds to complain about her scattered garbage cans to Senator Lott and what a serious predicament this is.  Senator Lott, knowing Miss Higgie quite well (we all know Miss Higgie quite well) explains that as much as he would love to help he really can’t do much about Miss Higgie’s garbage cans.  Trent Lott suggests that Miss Higgie should “call the Pascagoula Public Works Director.”  Whereas Miss Higgie becomes indignant and replies, “Well, Trent, honey, I really didn’t want to go that high.”

Now, that foolishness has been written to say, it was the same Miss Higgie who called Tent Lott about her cussed garbage cans that told my good wife a “little something” more years ago than either of us care to admit.  Off down here when you are told a “little something” you better have your wits about you.  That “little something” Miss Higgie told a much younger version of my bride than she is now brings this rabbit running back to the subject at hand.  It went something like this.  “You can always put more money in the bank, you can always squeeze another dog in the yard; and you can always fit another gun in the closet.”

Yeah, Kevin, go ahead, build the gun!!

Preparing for Winter 1864 will keep me busy enough between now and mid-February. It usually does.

Down here in the extra deep south, I'm getting in most of my reenacting schedule. Summers are so hot and muggy that I only do a few events at that time of year. Next event is the winter muster at Ft. Mcallister.

I was stationed in West Palm Beach in the Coast Guard back when ships were made of wood and men were made of steel.smile/!2214_EM2.gif. Winter is the best time in Flordia. Summers are to hot here in Kentucky to really enjoy the wool. Fall and spring, if I have a choice.

It is believed that my great, great uncle served with Bloody Bill Anderson and his group.  He was a part of the Centralia Massacre. Later He rode with Jesse James and was killed during a bank robbery gone bad.  At least that is the story.  The family changed their name and tried to erase any remembrance of bad blood in the family.

So Successionism is in my blood.  I don't care who's side i am on, just as long as I shoot something.  Oh, I will be loyal to whichever side has the best cooking.

Kevin,

Are you familliar the Fort Chambers Gun Shop in Chambersburg, PA.? They've got most anything you'd need to build a flintlock.
