Last weekend, the 4th. Texas did a living history at the National Civil War Museum. in Harrisburg, PA.

Ron Lauser, our Company Commander, had to leave before our last firing demostration. He asked me to make the presentation to the spectators.

After we marched over to the Spectator area, I stepped out of ranks and announced "Since I'm the oldest living Confederate Reenactor, I've been asked to speak to you folks." I went over our weapons and firing in nine times. We did the firing Demo, marched back to the spectator line and I talked a little bit about our clothing and equipment. I then invited the spectators back to our camp.

Back in camp, I was talking to a group about the fine points of shooting the rifle musket and allowed the folks to handle my rifle. At this point, I asked if there were any questions. A little girl, maybe ten or twelve raised her hand and asked "How old are you" I asked her why she wanted to know and she said, "Well I thought the Civil War was a long, long time ago?"

Lesson learned. Be very sure of your audience before making jokes!

Bill, are you a "dug" or "undug" relic?

Bill,

I had a similar thing happen.  After a presentation this fellow comes up out of the spectators and proceeds to tell me all about his ancestors who were in the Civil War.  He ended his monolog by asking, “Did you happen to meet any of them?”
