Gilmor’s Raid
Jerusalem Mill Village, Harford County, Maryland
July 11-12, 2009

Historic Jerusalem Mill Village is hosting its 6th Annual Civil War Encampment on the weekend of July 11-12, 2009. This year’s event marks the 145th anniversary of CSA Major Harry Gilmor's 1864 raid on McCourtney's Store, one of several beautifully restored buildings still located in the village. In July of 1864, a portion of Major Gilmor’s command, the 1st and 2nd Maryland Cavalry, passed through the small settlement, stopping long enough at the store to requisition supplies, and "liberate" fresh mounts. Gilmor’s men, already bone-tired from several days’ riding, then continued on their way to burn the railroad bridge at Magnolia Station over the Little Gunpowder, where they encountered a company of 100-day Ohio militiamen.

Join us, in the scenic Little Gunpowder Falls State Park, for our Civil War Weekend. Each day will be a reenactment of at least one part of "Gilmor's raid," as well as a Civil War "demonstration" battle. Between actions visitors are urged to stroll through the camps and interact with reenactors. The Susquehanna Travelers, talented musicians with a vast repertoire of Civil War era songs, will provide several performances, and Dan Toomey, a local historian and author, will be available to sign and discuss his many works, including "The Johnson-Gilmor Raid."

Directions to the site and further information can be found at the Jerusalem Mill website (www.jerusalemmill.org). Select the “Events” then “Gilmor’s Raid” links for information about the event.

Ken,
From what I've been able to dig up, the Ohioans encountered by Gilmor at the Gunpowder Bridge near Magnolia Station were probably a company of the 159th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers, organized in Zanesville Ohio on May 9th, 1864.

Regards,
Charlie

more info on the 159th...

After mustering in, the 159th, along with a number of other newly formed Ohio regiments, was hastily dispatched to the Baltimore-Washington area in order to relieve other longer-term troops for front line service. In mid May the unit was assigned by company detachments to defend the bridges along the PW&B RR (Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore RR). From July 28 to August 11 four companies of the unit (B, E, G and I) were charged with guarding the railroad in Havre de Grace. On August 13, 1864 the 159th was ordered back to Ohio, and the men were mustered out on August 24th.
