The following workshop is part of the Virginia Association of Museums' workshop series.

Bringing History to Life (Without Killing Yourself in the Process)

Tuesday, September 29th, 10am-3pm,  New Market Battlefield. Living history is one of the most powerful - and sometimes most poorly executed - interpretive tools used by museums. With the advent of the Civil War Sesquicentennial, many museums and historical societies in Virginia are planning living history presentations and reenactments, some for the first time. Experts in the field will discuss how to research Civil War-era costuming and culture; set interpretive/educational goals for programs; and  explore the legal, organizational, and operational requirements of reenactments. This workshop is designed to explain the challenges and rewards of historically accurate living history programs and help staff decide if this is the correct interpretative approach for their site.

Presenters include:
Scott Harris, Director, New Market Battlefield;
Troy Marshall, Supervisor of Historical Interpretation/Chief Educator, New Market Battlefield; Stacy Hampton, Victorian Society in America/Atlantic Guard Soldiers Aid Society;
other speakers tba

Moderated by:
Tracy Gillespie, Director of Historical Operations, Morven Park
