Neat image.  It seems like in the first couple stacks there is nothing but the rifles... but as you go further back there seems to be more and more gear in/on the stack.

And the "ghost" image standing on the side of the road.

Wonder how long they planned to be resting there if they have dropped that much gear.

Dave,

I love this picture.  This is the clearest I've ever seen it though.  Did you all notice the folks behind the gaslight and in front of the buildings to the right?

Also,

Why do you think there are two separate stacks off the road?

Could there be 2 stacks because of file closers?  Or maybe those who might be acting as skirmishers..

All Spriongfields.  That's a greatcoat thrown over the stack and notice the cartridge boxes slung on the belts.  I also like the fluted column on that gasoliere street lamp.

I'll bet the two separate stack of rifles are from something we don't see very often; File Closers.

Ken,

If you'll notice, there's a leaner on that first stack and not very carefully placed either.

The knapsack to musket ratio is a little out of kilter don't you think? I wonder if this company is off on some work detail or if it's those boys resting on the small hill behind the lamp post?

Could the separate stacks be the unit NCOs.  Maybe they were out in front of the men receiving instructions and then the men were orderd to stack.

Or maybe stragglers or guys on detail who caugh tup after the unit was paraded?

Look how the "leaners" are placed on stacks #2 & #3 (from the right). Is anyone else seeing what I'm seeing?

Nice image!  Something I noticed is that the stacks are not in a straight row.  It appears that the stacks follow the curve of the road.  Why wouldn't these be perfectly straight as the line should be if properly dressed?

My anal two cents...

Mr. Kepper,

I have sent you a private message about your grammer, diction, and spelling on this forum.  If you haven't read it, please do so.  It's just not fair to the rest of the membership to have to decipher a sentence.

Ordinarily I don't call folks out on the forum, but I have received complaints and it's just a little too much.

  Hallo!

I have always liked this picture for the details buried in it-

-the mix of M1863 and M1861 Springfields
-the Pattern of July 1864 cartridge box with embossed "U.S."
-the empty two slots for the eagle breat plate on the shoulder belt
-the spare boots on the one knapsack
etc.
