The one fellow sitting in front of the door looks like he is wearing pioneer rank, but on his shirt.

Hey, also the guy in the middle of the first pic looks to have three feet. Is that a brogan just sitting underneath him?

Ken, My guess it is. You'll notice the Gentleman also has a brogan on his right hand. He's shining a pair of shoes.

Charles put the fish head in the stew. ;) What's the man on the roof pretending he's dropping?

Yeah Bill, you're right. I really didn't notice. The guy on the roof looks to be dropping a book maybe.

And I might add that there is another feller with his sack tucked in on the right side of the picture. Gotta love it!

I am not able to view the original that Dave posted, but when I did a search and found this website: http://www.archives.gov/research/civil-war/photos/images/civil-war-004.jpg ![]() I think it is the same photo you are talking about. I see the 1st Sgt is using his Cpls properly to brush off his uniform. Ken, are you talking about the man on the right with the broom as having his sack tucked into his trousers? In the larger version of the photo, he is just wearing a shirt and not a sack coat. There appear to be 2 buttons close to the neck area. When you zoom in, you can see the end of the button area on the shirt. --Last edited by lhsnj on 2007-01-30 20:00:05 --

If I had to hazard a guess I'd say that fellow was dropping a piece of the large log that's being chopped up on the ground. Dave: remember how the wind sliced through the cracks in the door of the Pine Cottage at W64? Behold the period solution: newspaper tacked over the door. Wish we had thought of that. -Jeff

I zoomed in closer on the picture and the soldier with the broom looks like he has on 2 shirts. When you look near his elbows/forearms, it looks like the one is rolled up and you can see the other one under it. The same seems to be true for the soldier who is cleaning his brogans..

Nice group pose. I notice they left the one guy behind the tent on the right to sit this one out. What is the guy on the left sitting on? It looks like a burlap or some type of sack. The seated soldier in the middle has a pipe with a long stem on it.

Greg, I think this might be a group of junior ossifers. Not many privates had those fancy camp chairs, the guy in the center is sitting on. The gentleman sitting in front of the tent, over on the right, just might be a lowly private who wasn't invited for the picture taking.

Looks to me that the guy on the left is sitting on a feed bag of some sort. By the looks of the camp, it has been there for quite a while.

It's not uncommon to see feedbag being used as seating. There were literally heaps of the darn things lying about. I remember seeing one photo not long ago where a bag was bearing the personal keester of Ambrose Burnside.

Sparky, you know darn well the head from that tasty dried fish was installed in the doorframe of the Cooler Hut two cycles ago. Some animal no doubt found it to be delectible, or Dennis ate it some fine evening when he had a case of the munchies. Grumpy, did you get a good shot of the stockaded Sibley? The stockade resembles a big hot tub once the tent et al are removed for winter storage. I wonder if that stockaded Sibley in the image from Brandy Station also had a handy hidden compartment for "storage."

Charles, I saw a photo of the remains two stockaided Sibleys, with the tents removed, at a hospital near Washington. There were bunks built all around the stockaid walls. It would make for a pretty comfortable home.
