Y'all must be some long torsoed son of a guns. I'm also 6'1 with a standard length sling and even with it crossed I have it in the top hole and it rides right on the old hip just below the belt.

Ditto, except I'm an even 6ft. Though I often wonder if the cartridge box should be a little bit lower. I guess I'll find out after a few events, and seeing how easy or difficult it is to get to my rounds. --Last edited by TheBaldYankee on 2007-04-17 08:03:55 --

Anthony, It should ride on top of your hip just below the waist belt. The waist belt should go around your natural waist (across the navel). One mistake many in the hobby make is having their gear hang too low. If it is low on or below the hip it is goig to bounce around and slap you on every step. Remember the boys of the early 1860s would march 20 miles a day in some cases and this would get very annoying very quickly. At first it may feel too high but it is probably just right.

As a collector I have several original boxes with the slings still attached. They are all crossed. As a reenactor my sling is the same length as the originals. I put them in the last hole and as I am 6'2" and size 48 chest--it still is comfortable right under my waist belt as it should be. Years ago I even wore an original sling--same thing; not too high and not too low. And when shooting live fire I carry 40 live rounds (in a different box) and the load feels fine with where it sits and I can get into the rounds just fine. Go with how the originals did it. SW~

Bill, You are correct with the weight topic. One of my Mess buddies has weighted down tins to simulate the real feel actual rounds in his cartridge box. Call him crazy, but he's knows what it authentically feels like.

Right On! Then it's right where it should be. Thanks.

Only problem is that it doesn't matter how much he shoots that thing still weighs like it's full. --Last edited by toptimlrd on 2007-04-17 22:59:29 --
