You can probably get them from Reg't QM out in Gettysburg, if you are planning a trip to there.

You could try your local sporting goods stores.

Being in Woolrich, PA you should have no problem going to a local gun shoppe and getting proper caps and powder. Central Pa usually has quite a few blackpowder shooters and supplies should not be a problem

I know they usually have them in their tent at events.  So maybe a quick call to them might help see about getting some.  I didn't find any on the RQM website when I looked.

Give them a quick call and it might answer the question.

There's a gun shop called Fort Chamber's Supply in Chambersburg, PA, right off route #81 at the Scotland exit, Route 997, right across from Micky D's. They carry only muzzle loaders and muzzle loading supplies. There also a Gander Mountain in the Mall across the street.

Oh yeah, Fort Chambers is closed on Mondays.

Good hunting.   smile/suri_2002.gif

Bill,

Just had a Gander Mountain open up in St. Augustine and all they have are the six wingers.

Dulcie,

If all else fails, Dixie Gun works has them but they are a bit pricey http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?products_id=3723

I just got back from Resaca and picked up two tins from a sutler there, when you get to your next event, you should be able to find some.

oops back to the drawing board. i told him no CCI and no 6 wing..guess what he brought home? CCI and 6 wings.  ill have to convince him that he needs to take them back (why are men so stubborn?).  he did say they were the only ones they had there, and they are marketed for the civil war era rifle and replicas.

Please have him return the CCI caps. It has been discussed previously about the dangers of them. My unit does not allow them, and all new men are instructed on the correct caps, powder requirements, safety precautions, etc. I don't mean to seem rude in any way, but aren't any of his company NCOs working with him to get him up to par with the company? My unit is only 1 year old, but we have a lot of experienced men. They are all constantly mentoring the new men. I have a brand new fresh fish under my wing, so to speak. He knows that if I don't have the answer for him, I WILL find it.
Also, I am the unofficial Ordnance Sgt. for my unit. I purchase caps and powder in bulk, so none of our guys ever pay robber row prices or wonder where to buy caps. Currently, I purchase from Deer Creek Products in Indiana, and have been pleased with prices and service. I ordered 25 lb. of powder from them yesterday, it shipped today and will arrive here in Western N.C. on Thursday. They also sell the RWS (Dynamit Nobel) 4 winger caps for $38.50 for a 5 tin sleeve. Their number is :765-525-6181. They don't have a website, so if you want to order you must call. Even with all the restrictions, post 9-11, anyone can order up to 50 lb. of powder with nothing more than a credit card and a physical shipping address. I've ordered 25 tins of caps, so no problems there either. If your unit isn't buying in bulk, they should...it saves everyone money.

I must go back to the mentoring aspect. Your husband should call his 1st. Sgt. and ask some of the questions you've been asking here. I don't mind answering and helping, and I know these other folks don't either, but his own company mates are the ones who should be helping with the questions. After all, his 1st. Sgt. buys caps somewhere, so he should "hook him up". Don't misunderstand me, we'll answer questions and help as long you want us to, but that's what his company mates are there for. Like the smiley icon...hey y'all, help me out

Gregg

I will agree with you on the buying in bulk thing.  It does make it cheaper and easier especially when the rumor fly around about not being able to get caps or powder.

Dulcie,

Where did he buy them? Some places may not take them back since they are considered "ammunition". I am also not sure why they are referred to as "musket caps" since they are designed (from my understanding) to be used in the in line blackpowder weapons and not the traditional lock type weapons we use.

Please don't be afraid to continue asking questions here, but as one person mentioned you may want to talk to your unit as often they buy such things in bulk for a lot less. My unit regularly buys powder in 50 lb lots and members buy caps in similar manners. I actually was hoping to pick up a bulk purchase of caps last weekend but the sutler row area was slim pickins.

ive asked 3 men and all of them told me to buy them at events with sutlers, BUT we need them for Memorial Day and then an event the weekend after, neither of which have sutlers. i cant just drive 3 hrs down to Gettysburg to buy them. noone could tell me where to buy online. they also said try the local hunting store, thats what he did and came out with the CCI 6 petal caps (the person working told him they werent the 6 petal ones... so he figured they were okay, i opened one up and it is 6 petal).

sorry... im getting frustrated.

$38.50? ugh... I ended up buying some from Blockade Runner... and spent that much for 3 tins that have 200 in each! i dont mind buying bulk just for my husband.

well at least he didnt spend a lot on the CCI 6 petals... he can mess with his gun somewhere and shoot those ones!

When you buy bulk powder are you buying it loose or already in cans?  The last two powder orders we made were fifty pounds each and the powder came loose.  It was in twenty-five pound bags. It has to be weighed and placed in cans.  We have an understanding with our people when buying powder they give us an empty can for each pound they buy.  It also helps to have a friendly artillery unit near by from which to lay in a supply of empty cans.

I know that for events like parades, we don't expect all of our fresh fish to show up with powder or caps.  That guys usually will have some extras rolled and caps to lend.  You may want to ask if this is possible.

Do any of the guys in your unit have some extra powder they could share?  I know that before some events, a couple of us will get together and roll cartiridges and we just share the powder.

Dulcie,

As Greg mentioned, the unit I belong to also brings extra caps and rolled blank cartridges to events.  These are among the “loaner” items provided for people new to the hobb

I just heard that there is a chance for the Bass Pro in my area to stock the German caps again.  If they do, they only cost $5.88 a tin.  Is there a Bass Pro close by?

we have the rounds and caps covered for the parade, but we have an event that saturday also and they said he needs a lot of powder and caps for that.

we have the powder, thats not a problem. and i ordered the paper ladys last week, not sure when we will get those (he can make his own but doesnt have time right now and he wants to make sure he is doing it right).  its just the caps that we are having a problem getting. i did tell the guy in charge that we probably wont have them in time for memorial day, and he said no problem he will have them for us.. its just saturday we need them. (i told my husband he may have to go without and make his own gun noises )

i dont think theres a bass pro near by. where we moved from had one really close..too bad i didnt know that we needed those back before we moved! though we may stock up when we go back in august!

i ordered some so we have some for the event, but ouch on the price. now that i have hte above place though ill just buy them like that.

Curtis -

Typically, when one says they are buying "bulk powder" it means that it's going to come in either 25 or 50 pound bags, or what you are referring to as "loose."

It's getting harder to find bulk powder nowadays because of all of the Patriot Act rigamarole. Usually when you do, you have to pick it up from the vendor yourself. This can be a particular pain if the nearest vendors are 6 hours or more driving distance.
