Like my subject, ha, what would the Federal Field Medic look like. Not a surgeon, but one who'd be out in the field with them, if there was one. Don't want to sound stupid, I was just wondering, haha.

Chase,

They didn't have Medics, at least as we understand the modern term. They had the Ambulance Corp and musicians acting as stretcher bearers. There might have been an hospital orderly roaming around, but that's about it. You medical types, did I miss anyone?

As to ambulance corps, about the only distinguishing item might be an ambulance corps arm band. A steward may have the medical chevron on.

  Hallo!

Are you thinking of a Hospital Steward?

They typically just wore the green half chevron with the caduceus versus the plain green half chevron of a ambulance man.

Ranking above above the first sergeant of a company, they were assigned to a regiment or hopsital.

In battle, they assisted at dressing stations or in the field hospital.
On the march they were responsible for the hospital supplies and medicine chests.

They also oversaw the general administration of the hospital,  and their duties included supervising and disciplining other hospital attendants, ventilation, lighting, and heating of the hospital, purchasing and caring for hospital supplies, keeping hospital records, and supervising food services.   Other duties included the maintenance of the hospital dispensary and the preparation and administration of prescribed medicines.  They also were authorized to apply dressings and bandages, apply blister cups and leeches, extract teeth, and administer enemas and injections to the urethra.

I imagine he would look something like this -- in fatigue blouse, kersey trow, and cap of course, and no insignia, because if he's not a medical officer or steward he's just another extra-duty private:
