Identified as an Ohio soldier. Note the small pistol in his right hand: Collar of frock sewn down: Gods and Generals looked nothing like this(Jackson on left): Is it his cap or his hair that's out of control? Nice frock: Untrimmed Jacket: Unidentified group of NCO'S I may have posted this before: --Last edited by grumpydave on 2007-06-07 07:07:14 --

With all of the photos I'm finding of guys with the collar or their frock coats folded down, I'm afraid I may start another CW reenactor "fad." I'd venture to guess fully one-fourth of all the photos I have of guys wearing frocks the collar is folded or sewn down. As for the Chassaur Uniforms, I believe there were only three units in the entire CW that were issued those uniforms. The 83rd PA, 62nd PA and the 18th Mass. The photo has no markings, even to where it was taken. So, find muster rolls for those three regiments and look for relatives. Yes, they look like brothers to me. The 83rd could only wear their chassaur uniforms by direct order. You see, whoever measuerd the regiment for the uniforms, fouled up, and almost none of the coats and trousers fit. You do see documentation that members of the 83rd still had the goat fir knapsacks, talmas and other parts of the Chassaur equippage they were issued, even after 2nd Bull Run. Neat stuff. Did anyone notice, in the Stonewall photo, how the bottom two rails seem to be in suspended animation? I mean, what's holding them up? They're cut in the middle for goodness sake! --Last edited by grumpydave on 2007-06-07 19:38:39 --

The rails extend beyond the frame of the picture and are likely held up by posts beyond the frame to the left and right, we just see where they come together.More than likely they were a hastily put up fence line; now the question is if it was put up for the camp, why? If it were for a hitching post it would only need the top rail.

Often times you can see the “feet” of the stand (or whatever it is called) adjacent to the feet of the person in the photo. It can be seen in several of the pictures on this page. I know it is some type of device to assist in holding the subject still as the photo is made. How does it work and what does it look like?

Three foot stand, telescoping and locking post, attatched to a "u" that has pads on the ends to rest your head so you don't move.

I like to wear my frock collar folded down. Of course, I like blue spectacles, too.
