A well known and respected civilian reenactor didn't register for the GAC version of Gettysburg due to probable family obligations, which are now no longer an issue.  She'd now like to try to attend.

Unfortunately, registration is now closed for the event.

Does anyone out there have a registered position that has become open due to someone becoming unable to attend?  If so, please let me know.  Civilian is preferred, but my guess is she'll manage to slip in under the wire no matter the type opening.

I think the right and proper thing to do might be to try to contact the event organizers/staff/person in charge of registration BY PHONE and try to work something out instead of sneaking into the event and what amounts to STEALING what others have rightfully paid for. I believe the legal term is "Theft of Services."

Not at all:  It is substituting one reenactor for another, a common practice, with the substitute reimbursing the original for the registration fee.

Apparently, you have misunderstood the intent of the effort.  I may have been less clear than I could have in describing the situation.

Musta' been that "slip under the wire," comment. But still contact the folks, I'd bet they'll let her in. There's gonna' be no-show's for sure.

The GAC Web Site says they will except substitutes until June 1st. Since most people registered by unit. They want the individual who did the registering to request a change.

"Slip in under the wire" referred only to finding a legitimate method of attending after registration had been closed.

I reckon my reputation as an online agitator and trouble maker has had unexpected consequences....

Bernie,

You've just confirmed my reputation as a trouble maker .  Barely lifting a finger,  I can get someone as honest and innocent as you branded as an accessory to crime.

Nope, folks, I just figured that I did not have a snowball's chance in Alabama to get a Daddy sitter that could solve any problem that presented in Alzheimers Land during the July 4th week.  Sometimes miracles occur.

At High Tide's registration stayed open long enough for me to take advantage of that miracle.  GAC's did not.

Knowing that they did permit substitutes, I started casting about for a vacated slot.  Bernie was one of the folks I asked.  Seemed like a good solution, as I was perfectly happy to reimburse the stay-at-home for their fee.

And no, Grumpy, they won't let me register quick and easy with check in hand.  Under their procedure, which I finally got an answer for this weekend,  I've got to find some unit that is going, and get their commander to swear I'm a member and late register me.

So, that's my next step.  Either that or I'll just mosey on home shortly after Doug Dobb's group of hearty fellers comes marching into town on Wednesday.

By the way, if there is any fool who does think he can wander in without going through registration at GAC, think again.  At the 140th, they had folks checking registration passses at midnight near the portas.  Good thing I had that little paper chit pinned to my apron, or that feller would have found himself standing in a puddle.

Pick up the phone honey---I'm at home today mopping up an overflowing air conditioning system that had 'routine maintenance' 30 days ago, and an after hours service call on Sunday.  I woke up to water pouring through 2 floors this morning, the direct result of something they did yesterday.   I should be at Daddy's, but I'm not, and he's a little confused on that account.

The folks say of course they are going to pay for everything.  Its gonna be real funny when amongst the things listed is 75 pounds of  used to be dry hominey.

Shame too, I'd held it long enough for the weevils to get started good, so I could boil it up and feed it to you boys this summer.

Bernie, I'm sure you know substituion is not allowed at all events.  NHC does not allow substitutions or transfers.  Depends on the organizers.

Grumpy,

The NPS did just change things at the last minute. In a good way we hope.

What I was referring to, will be a life changing experience. I'm looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time.

Grumpy,

About 13 years ago. I don't plan on re-learning. I'll rock her, feed her, burp her and pass her off to Grandma or darling daughter for diapering. Like I said, I don't plan on re-learning!

Congratulations Rob,
Question: Never having any children myself, Does a reenactors baby start off drinking camp fire coffee and "teething " on a piece of "Hard Tack"?

Good luck and don't spoil the young one too quickly.

Well that is my penny and a half. (Two cents after taxes)

Dan,
How did you get such a low tax rate...only 25%?  I guess it must be an advantage of retirement.
