hank...you bring out some good points.. it is mainstream. i wouldnt mind getting searched.. or even be required to carry my traveling papers. but how many mainstreamers would (i do believe im a hardcore at heart!)?

therefore i think this is going to have to be something that a few units know about and we can act it out. it will only be a small thing... since i do have 4 children to watch and such. though i think some time away may be nice!!!

theres a place in east pennsylvania, and for some reason the name has completely escaped me. they have a huge craft fair at the end of june for several weeks. they also have kids events and the such. but they also have an actual reenactment of a hanging. curiosity has me wondering how they do that, and if its something that could be done elsewhere without actually killing me! (i really would like to live!).

im trying to figure out how to do it all at this point. thats why i started planning now... but seems i need to get things ready soon so i can have the help of the commanding officers.

If you're a hardcore at heart, it's a shame you can't go to events more suited to what you're looking for, and see first-hand the difference in approach.

How to do a hanging? I've heard there are harnesses that the person can wear under his or her clothes that the "noose" is hooked to, which support the person after they drop. But it seems to me the mechanics are the easiest part.

I'm more interested in how one can recreate the context of historic situations, rather than the mechanics. Questions like, how can one make the other reenactors and/or the spectators have the emotional reaction that one wants to evoke? How can one interpret the complexity of the past with its many viewpoints? How can one give participants and spectators a sense of being part of another long-gone world that was nonetheless as real then as ours is now?

With a craft fair and kids' events surrounding the hanging, I'm guessing the situation is designed to work against those things.

Though logic would suggest that the bigger the stunt, the more powerful the emotional effect on the spectators and participants, there's also the greater risk of turning it into slapstick or cartoon violence and therefore evoking the past only to trivialize it.

No easy answers, and in fact in a lot of cases, the quick laugh or the brief cool stunt is the only goal, and the participants would consider an attempt at anything more only a pointless distraction from their enjoyment.

kutztown! thats the name of it. they do the hanging of suzanna cox.  and after a search... suzanna cox was hung in 1809 for the murder of her newborn baby.

and yes.. i should step over to hardcore, i do hope to do a few hardcore events next yr. being our first yr reenacting, i wasnt ready for hardcore, nor do i think im ready. i know my husband will not go hardcore, but i have permission to go without him.

To be honest, I'd help with anything you need to get ready for a p/h event, but planning a scenario at a mainstream event? No. Not my thing.
