Dulce,
If no one has posted this...Spiros Marinos shop, the house on the Baltimore Pike, across from the Evergreen Cemetary, in Gettysburg. Spiros will install hobnails for you while you wait. Tell him "dark man" sent you.

Tom T.,

What I was trying to get at with the tennis shoe comment was more of: We wear them so often there's no thinking about how you walk in them. VS, bootees, if you don't think sometimes, you end ass over tincups.

  Hallo!

I see an older post was resurrected...

Hobnails, heel plates, and toe plates were not "designed" to aid in traction, per se, but rather to extend sole and heel life of the shoe/boot.  ;)

My WWI shoes and boots follow the period practice and are hobnailed with period hobnails (some vendors appear to use upholstery tacks..).
For climbing up trench walls, scrambling in an out of shell craters, etc, etc they REALLY help with traction.
On "modern" surfaces such as asphalt roads, concrete streets, etc, they can be like ice skates at times.

Plus, "indoors" on wooden floors, tile floors, or ceramic floors they can be "unwelcomed."  (Especially the bogus upholstery tacks when the heads break off or wear off leaving the sharp shanks exposed...)
